Behind the Science with Dr. Bob Roussel, Chief of the Research Support Operations Division

Support Operations Division
How long have you been at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine?
I've been at USARIEM as a Department of the Army Civilian for seven years. I previously served in USARIEM for three years as a military officer.
How did you become interested in Soldier Nutrition and Performance?
As a Soldier myself for over 23 years, and an Army biochemist, I was always interested in those topics. It was a privilege to be assigned here years ago to contribute to the mission that focuses on those important areas.
What projects are you currently working on?
It's not so much about any projects I'm personally working on, rather it's the great work being done by the Research Support Operations Division team. We are constantly focused on improving what I already consider superior research support services in the areas of regulatory protections, legal agreements and partnering, project management, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education program management, medical support for research subjects, vivarium operations and analytical laboratory capabilities.
What aspects of your job do you love and find most gratifying?
Leading such a great group of dedicated and highly capable professionals. They come to work every day to support researchers who are improving the health and performance of those who have volunteered for one of the most noble professions, the United States Soldier.
What part of your job do you find to be the most difficult?
I wear a lot of hats that often forces me to focus on the problems of today rather than have time to strategically think about tomorrow.
When you are not at the Institute, what do you like to do for fun?
Fun for me is quality family time, spending time with friends preferably at the beach, and long walks with my dog in the woods.
